Poster Project- Akdong Musician

Hello guys!
I want to share you a poster I made similar to the KPOP band, Ak-Dong Musician, made by using Photoshop and Camera Raw. I'm proud of this poster and hope you enjoy it.

The picture was taken today on a foggy morning on the school's field. My group was grateful of the fog, for it created such a surreal effect to the pictures ( but it was kind of cold). And if you curious of how I made the image using Photoshop, I drew the leaves, flowers, and ribbons with the brush tool, use the shape button, use the quick selection tool to copy and paste my drawings, and transform to change the size. And as for Camera Raw, I adjust the contrast, exposure and other levels including the tint level. I did not really crop the image or add saturation because it was already framed well and there was enough color.
Also I revised the picture on Photoshop. So below is the revised one, the original Photoshop one and the original picture. Enjoy!

F-stop: f/4.6
Exposure: 1/30 sec
ISO speed-140
Resolution: 300 dpi

And I share refer to you guys How to Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. His book said that since nothing is original, "new" ideas came from previous ones and people add their own twist to make it theirs since they can't help it. So I hope I did a wonderful of doing so.

Three hours of work spent on this poster and I have fun figuring out how to make it. Did I impress you?

FINALS-Reflection of Light

More nature pictures. I took them yesterday during a 30 minute break from studying English and Pre-calculus finals. Glad I took a break.
Hope you feel serene and I did not edit any of these pictures.

 and my perspective.

A Beatles car. I like the contrasting yellow and black colors.
Now I'm thinking of a reference of Professor Agasa's car (Detective Conan)
Check out the anime series; it taught me some aspects of Japanese culture.

The silt is really smooth. It feels really good!
I thought the slanting light and curve of the silt create an interesting feeling.

Period 1 - Semester Final

Guess what? This is my final for Digital Photography so you can have a taste of what I learned this year.

Starting off, from this Lens of the day post, my favorite picture would be the seventh picture of the contrasting lights and colors because the picture has a lot of depth and contrast between the lanterns and the man. In this picture, the light is excellent, showing a sense of a surreal world the man is in. It also allows the viewers to also imagine of this kind of world as they try to decipher what the lights are.
Also the best picture of that link is the fourth one because the picture captures the emotion the Palestinians were feeling after a bombing has occurred.  In this picture you see the dense smoke and rubble on the left, creating a veil of mystery of what's about to happen. I believe this is the best picture of the nine because it is well framed and has excellent exposure of the people's emotions.

Out of all of my work this year, my best picture would be  Master Photography-Gordon Parks one. I like the first picture of me holding the "We live in a G.P.A. state" picture because it shows the amount of depth and emotion, similar to the "We live in a Police State" picture taken by Gordon Parks. Also I like the framing of the background of my previous report cards because it adds more meaning to the overall emotion of the picture. I spent of a lot time on this particular photo and I am proud of it. And you can see it right here.
If I have more time on this picture, I would position myself in a way that is symmetrical with background and hold the sign more straight. In addition, I would try to avoid the glare on the sign that is coming off from the camera.

In the beginning of the year, I chose three rules of composition:
1. Rule of Thirds
2. Depth of Field
3. A clear background that doesn't distract attention from the subject

A picture of my own describes these rules would be from ATPI Contest. More clearly it is this picture (the first one).

This one shows Rule of Thirds given by the symetry of the tower and pond. Also the background does not distract the attention from the subject but enhances it instead. As far as depth of field, this picture, it shows it by letting the eye wander off into the distance behind the tower.

Since the beginning of the year, my teacher, Mr. Farley, have been telling everyone his main rule of composition: Get Closer. He said that to be a good photographer and to take good pictures, you have to get closer and be comfortable with the subject too. Without this rule, no one can take a great picture.

Now for groups, the main advantages would be support from them. They can help position the picture, give constructive criticism, teaching fun and necessary skills like Photoshop, give creative ideas to build on, and make me smile. Working in groups is a necessary life skill and it helps build one's confidence too. The disadvantages of working in a group is when the group as a whole don't want to work and instead focus on other topics. This distracts me and place more pressure on ourselves as the deadline approaches. Also another few disadvantages would be that the people in the group work by themselves, do homework, or don't care about the task that's at hand. The internet can be used as a place of distraction and allows us to work individually because it's easier to use the computer than to talk to someone.

One of my favorite pictures is Jessica Kam's Inspired by a Master Photographer- Eugene Smith. I like the last one of Sharon, Michael, Allen, and Anish all position but only Michael has a goofy face. This picture shows depth of field and a feeling of happiness and humor. In addition, it makes me smile when I see it.

A Little History
Gordon Parks is the Master Photographer my group chose for the project. One of his main contribution is helping the Brazilian poor boy named Fabio by photographing him and showing the poverty in Brazil. What Gordon Parks did was make a close connection with his subject (Fabio) and this is essential for taking a good picture and part of "Get Closer" rule. Gordon Parks also contribute sense of segregation feelings of the Jim Crow Laws of the south to the field of photography, showing how powerful photography is.

Dorothea Lange's most popular picture is Migrant Mother taken in February or March of 1936 in Nipomo, California. She was employed by the Farm Security Administration to raise awareness of the suffering the migrant workers from the Dust Bowl to the public.

Around that time on 1936, Life magazine also began publishing and became one of the wide-read magazine across America.

Earlier, the "King of Rock" Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935. He became a major influence in music and is often referred from the character Jesse Katsoplois in the show Full House.

A decade later, Robert Capa found Magnum magazine for all photographer in 1947 and this was revolutionary because Magnum allow the photographers to have copyright of their pictures.

RollingStone Album cover of "Please Please Me"

Hello guys and I hope all of you have a wonderful new year! To kick off the new year, my teacher have a project of recreating a picture or an album cover from Rolling Stone 500's Greatest Hits and my group picked..."Please Please Me" by the famous Beatles. The Beatles is my dad's favorite band and he let me listen to this album including the other one made in 1980's. I would say that my favorites songs would be "Help Me" and "Can't Buy Me Love". I hope you enjoy this picture (even though I think it's not well-taken because the exposure is really bad). Enjoy and "won't you please help me."

Masters of Photography Reflection

Hello guys!

Now since it's January and the school semester is almost over with a new one coming up, it's time for a reflection based on the Gordon Parks inspired pictures I took and my photography over the semester. To be honest, I never imagine my photography class to included worldly knowledge as we daily look at Lens. I find Lens a very diverse, inspiring website full of information around the globe. In addition, I thought we would learn how to use Photoshop more since I wanted learn how to edit my pictures using Camera Raw and the Photoshop program. It seems like I learn how to use Photoshop more from my peers and playing around Photoshop.

Throughout the semester I improved my photography not only by gaining more outside knowledge, but also applying my gained knowledge onto my photography. I learned the impact photography has and how the framing of the subject along with its background can portray strong feelings towards the audience. For instance, we watched documentaries about famous master photographers including Dorothea Lange and Robert Capa to see how their work influence others. And such photographers show how powerful photography is even when it may show pictures of whom we may never met before.
.
As for the Masters of Photography project, it shows how driven I can be when I wanted to take a certain picture in mind. For example, the first picture of me holding the sign shows how much thought and effort I have put in that one picture. Plus also my pictures shows that I'm not afraid to ask my classmates to help out since each picture shows a different subject and a different place. I guess I wanted to show how I really want to represent similar ideas and feelings as Gordon Parks has expect that I didn't plan the fourth picture as well as I had with the others. I could have frame the picture by using a different background, same for Samuel's picture. Both backgrounds of those pictures weren't frame properly. In addition, I could have work on Stanley's picture a bit longer using Photoshop, but I guess one and half week is a pretty long time. And I like it, including Stanley who later commented me about it. Other than that, I would also planned out my pictures ahead of time because I ran out of time and ideas near the due date. Hahaha!

As I have mention before, I have a photography group to help me out with my pictures and blog. In my group (which has changed from time to time due to new student arrivals) I have Jessica Kam, Amandi Kwok, Samuel Sze, Anish Bhanot, Michael Shen, Irene Wu, Sharon Hsu, Vina Kong and more people who weren't technically in my group. My current one has Amandi Kwok, Samuel Sze, Irene Wu, and Vina Kong; and I really like my group. They have helped individually with my pictures, commenting on my blogs and helping me whenever I need it. The main benefits of having a group are diverse skills and ideas to learn from, fun people to hang out with, and helpful support to encourage all of us. I want to say thank you to all of them and the "more people" part: Mr. Farley, Aileen Hsu, Allen Hsiao, and more. You guys have helped me improved and I appreciate it.

However, there's always a downside to having groups and to me there aren't many. One of the downsides I experience is when everyone does not feel like working and that kind of feeling discourages to work on my photography. Another downside is my group sometimes don't always pay attention and work on other classwork, which happens to all of us. I guess the negative effect is when that lack of enthusiasm spreads to all of us and it's natural for that to happen. But I think that's about it because my group is really one of the best.

In fact from looking at my group's blogs I think most of them used creativity and effort in almost all of them. I like how each picture is unique and has the photographer's own flair and energy. The ones I looked were Aileen Hsu's, Irene Wu's, Amandi Kwok's, Vina Kong's, Michael Shen's, and Samuel Sze's. Since I don't like to play favorite, please check out theirs and be amazed of their work.

More Beautiful Flowers

Enough Chinese? Hahhaha. Well I just spent 1-2 hour(s) practicing for my Chinese pronunciation test. Meap. Now to the flowers.
Some I can name but others I cannot.

  • Common name: Bermuda buttercap, Sour grass, English weed, etc.
  • Scientific name: Oxalis pes-caprae
  • Commonly found in California, America, Israel, Europe and Australia (native to South Africa area) Also it can be found in salt-marshes
  • Perennial Flower, color is yellow and has shamrock leaves
  • Takes a few weeks to germinate
  • Prefer in shady, moist areas
  • Apparently it's a weed, an invasive species, but a pretty one. :D But it's difficult to remove once it's settled.
  • Beneficial to bees and wildlife that wants to eat it seed ( and also livestock food), and it's edible but not recommend. It's a source of oxalic acid but also a diuretic. Eating too much of them may cause calciun oxalate kidney stones. Usually that happens to animals when they eat it in excess.

  • Common names: Bird of Paradise (allusion to Up) Crane Flower, Strelitzia, The Official Flower of the City of Los Angeles
  • Scientific name: Strelitzia reginae
  • Commonly found in South America and Latin America like Mexico, Chile, and Belize, Bangladesh, America like California and Florida, Australia  ( native to South Africa)
  • Perennial flower, colors range for the sepals is red to orange to yellow and for the petals is blue to purple; the "beak" is called the is spathe
  • Takes 3-5 years to flower after germination. Yes that's a long time.
  • Prefer to be in warm, sunny area with fertilized loamy ( silt, sand, and clay) soil
  • Drought resistant, ) it's a monocot (for a more scientific name monocotyledonous
  • Beneficial  to birds who sometimes perch on the "beak"

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK!

Hello guys and Happy New Year!
To celebrate the coming of 2015 and to make the most of my winter break, my family decided to go to Yosemite National Park and see the scenery there. But man, it's so COLD. The temperature was more or less at the freezing point, but we enjoy seeing Half Dome, Curry village, and an icy waterfall. I hope you guys enjoy these pictures. (They're not edited)
